What is web development?

Generally speaking, web development is the work involved in designing and creating a website which may span from containing a simple, static page of plain text or data, to complex applications, online shopping interfaces, and social networking services. The development process is often a collaborative effort between departments towards a unified vision, rather than the domain of a designated department or even a sole developer.

Web development can be referred to in many ways and there are different perceptions of what a web developer is and can be. There are three areas of web developer specialisation: front-end, back-end, and full-stack. Front-end developers are responsible for behaviour and visuals that run in the user browser, while back-end developers deal with the servers, and full-stack encompass both areas.
For current developers, the main non-design aspects of building websites will spring to mind i.e. writing markups and code, however, web development has become more readily available and accessible via the use of content management systems (CMS) that help to make designing and managing content easier with only basic technical skills - there is less of a requirement to learn specific coding languages (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) in order to create responsive web design, accessible via a browser on desktop PCs or mobile devices.
